The Art of Bridesmaids’ Etiquette

Elegant and positioned to the left of the bride, bridesmaids are far more than decorative figures in the ceremony.

More like a dedicated support team—or a true “bride squad”—than merely graceful attendants, bridesmaids have become a cherished tradition in many Italian weddings. Etiquette suggests no more than eight bridesmaids (except in royal weddings), with one designated as the maid of honor, carrying the greatest responsibilities from the very beginning of the wedding planning. From helping choose the dress and accessories to organizing the bachelorette party, these trusted allies are at the bride’s side every step of the way.

One of the most emotional and important moments shared between the bride and her bridesmaids is the getting-ready ritual, where they assist her in preparing for her grand entrance. The bridesmaids typically precede the bride by a few minutes along the aisle, entering either in single file or in pairs, taking their place to the bride’s left and in front of the witnesses (if they are not serving in that role).

The maid of honor, in addition to holding the bride’s bouquet and other accessories during the ceremony, helps her in key moments throughout the day—such as entering and exiting the car. For this reason, like the wedding planner, the maid of honor is often the last to leave the reception.

When it comes to the attire, the bride usually selects her dress and contributes to its cost. Bridesmaids’ dresses typically match the wedding’s color palette, though styles can vary to suit different body types. Of course, wearing white is reserved exclusively for the bride. Shoes are generally chosen by the bridesmaids, following the ceremony’s color scheme and guidance. Each bridesmaid also carries a smaller bouquet—similar to the bride’s, as a special gift from her.

Though the role comes with responsibilities, being chosen as a bridesmaid is a profound honor. It signifies the bride’s trust and her desire to have you by her side for every moment of her most important day.
